Piispalassa Kannonkoskella kesäkuun puolivälissä vietetty ripariviikko oli haastava ja hauska. Meillä oli asiansa osaava vetäjäporukka, joka on ratkaisevan tärkeää. Oma kokemus rippileireistä on vähäistä tätä työtä vuosikymmenet tehneisiin kollegoihin verrattuna. Toisaalta Iitissä kerätty kokemus viideltä kesältä nuorisotyönohjaajaidolini Umbron (jolla leirejä plakkarissa yli 80) opissa on auttanut. Nuorethan ovat aina upeita, mutta tuo 15-vuoden ikä on rankka ja kaveripaineet kovat. Senkin tähden isoset ovat avainroolissa, kun nuoret etsivät ja rakentavat omaa uskon identiteettiään.
Meidän isoset kertoivat leirillä ihanan avoimesti omasta uskostaan ja sen merkityksestä elämälle. Heitä kuunnellessa toivoin, että olisin itsekin uskaltautunut aikoinaan omalla riparilla kuulemaan ääntä, joka jo silloin kutsui. Monet turhat toilailut olisivat jääneet vähemmälle ja rakkaus itseä ja muita kohtaan olisi ollut terveemmällä pohjalla.
Kohta leirin jälkeen koitti juhannus. Sain houkuteltua Tapsan Muurameen, sillä itselläni oli töitä juhannusviikonloppuna – ja kivoja töitä olikin! Vietimme juhannusaattona juhlaa seurakuntamajalla Muuratjärven rannalla. Osassa maata oli voimassa metsäpalovaroitus, mutta Keski-Suomessa sai vielä tulen tehdä, joten kokko roihusi yhtä komeasti kuin edellisenäkin vuonna. Juhlijoita kävi paikalla reilusti yli sata henkeä, makkara maistui ja saunassakin riitti kävijöitä.
Juhannuspäivä alkoi aamu-uinnilla Päijänteessä ja jatkui kirkossa messulla, jossa soivat haitarit, kannel ja koskettimet. Kiitos Anna & Riitta! Iltauinnit uitiin Muuratjärven puolella, minkä jälkeen söimme pakkaseen pääsiäisen jäljiltä jääneitä lampaankyljyksiä. Sunnuntaina oli vielä aamujumalanpalvelus.
Kesäloma alkoi viikko juhannuksen jälkeen. Loman alkupäivät vierähtivät Muuramessa viimeistellen Christina-lehden kolumnia ja haastattelua, jonka tein seurakuntalaisistamme Anne ja Markus Leppiniemestä. Pariskunta järjestää kotonaan hengellisiä iltoja, joissa kokoontuu väkeä yli seurakuntarajojen. Voit tutustua tähän ihanaan ja inspiroivaan opettajapariskuntaan syyskuun Christinassa.
Helsingissä alkuloma kului valmistautuen yllättäen menehtyneen rakkaan floridalaisen ystävän siunaukseen. Marja-Liisa oli läheisimpiä uskonystäviäni ja varsinainen rukoussoturi. Vaikka päällimmäisenä tunteena on kiitollisuus yhteisistä hetkistä ja jaetusta uskosta, niin silti syvä haikeus on suuresti sävyttänyt tätä kesää.
Heinäkuun puolivälissä käväisin Keski-Suomessa osallistuakseni Himoksella pidettävään New Wine -konferenssiin. Parikymmentä vuotta pyörinyt rukousta, ylistystä ja armolahjoja painottava tapahtuma kerää yhteen ihmisiä ympäri Suomea. Paikalla on paljon heitä, jotka ovat olleet mukana alusta asti. Ohjelmaa on kaikenikäisille ja se on korkeatasoista ja monipuolista. Ihan hyvä työviikonloppu siis!
En ole jaksanut tehdä viime viikkoina mitään ihmeellistä, mutta se kai on loman tarkoitus. Merkittäviä kohtaamisia on kuitenkin ollut, osa ihania yllätyksiä. Joitain tärkeitä tapaamista ja juhlia olen joutunut perumaan tai jättämään väliin, senkin kanssa on elettävä.
Tapsan kanssa on jonkin verran pyöräilty ja käyty myös nuuskimassa Nuuksion metsät. Oli hienoa vihdoin päästä näkemään ja kokemaan Haltia-luontokeskus mahtavine multimediaesityksineen ja metsän tuoksu -suihkuineen. Suosittelen.
Loman viimeisen viikon vietän Raumalla jo viime vuodesta tutulla vuokramökillä. Toiveena on lepoa, lukemista, vähän kulttuuria ja paljon hyviä hetkiä perheen kanssa.

Joys and Sorrows of Summer
Confirmation camp spent at Piispala, Kannonkoski was challenging and fun, as they always are. We had a great group of youth leaders which is the key to make a camp accomplish its goal. Young people are just wonderful, but a 15-year old’s age is tough and pressure from piers is intense. Just for that reason, youth leaders play such an important role when teenagers are trying to figure out who they are and what part faith has in their lives.
Our youth leaders who are only a few years older than the campers set such a beautiful example of what it means to live out your faith. Watching them and listening to their testimonies made me wish once again that I would have been bold enough at my own confirmation camp to hear God’s voice that was calling me back then. There would have been a lot less wasted time spent in futilities and the love toward myself and others would have had a better foundation.
Soon after this camp was time for mid-summer festival (Juhannus – according to St. John ). I was able to convince Tapani to come up to Muurame, as I had to work the whole weekend, very fun work though. We spent mid-summer eve at the congregation’s getaway house on the shores of the Muuratjärvi lake with some hundred and fifty parishoners. Some parts of the country had a forest fire warning in place, but we were still able to build a fire in central Finland and so able to enjoy a bonfire as in previous years past. The grilled sausages and “pulla” were a hit and the traffic between the sauna and the lake was swift.
Mid-summer day began with a morning swim at Päijänne lake and continued at church with a mass, where we were treated by a talented accordion ensemble, Anna and Riitta! We did our evening swim at the Muuratjärvi with sauna after which we had delicious grilled lambchops for Midsummer dinner. What a great work weekend! There was still another worship service for me to lead on Sunday morning but that is always a blessing.
I had one more week of work after mid-summer before the start of my summer vacation. The first few days of vacation I stayed in Muurame working on my Christina magazine column and interview that I did with two congregation members Anne and Markus Leppiniemi. The couple arrange praise and prayer nights at their home, where people from different congregations gather. You can meet this wonderful and inspirational couple in September’s Christina edition.
The first week of my vacation in Helsinki was spent arranging and planning for a loved Florida friends funeral. Marja-Liisa was one of my closest friends in faith and an actual prayer soldier. Her passing in June was unexpected and a shock. Even though I can feel a great thankfulness on the surface for all the time we spent together and for our shared faith, a deep sadness has tinted this summer.
In the middle of my vacation, I took time to go to Jämsä to attend the New Wine Conference. This wonderful praise and prayer concentrated event, which has been around for about twenty years, draws people from all around Finland. The main speakers were from the UK and there were some great workshops.
During these past weeks Tapani and I have enjoyed many bike rides around Helsinki. We have also done some hiking in Nuuksio forest– a great National Park area only twenty minute drive from home. We also visited the Haltia Nature Center which is located in the park. It is an overall exhibition of Finnish nature with spectacular multimedia presentations and interactive showrooms. We, for example, got to take “a smell of a forest shower”(picture of Tapani in green smoke). Nature does you so good!
The last week of vacation will be spent in Rauma at the same cabin we rented last year. My hope is for rest, reading, a little culture and a lot of time spent with family.
